Rockdale County’s 2nd Annual GAWP Model Water Tower Competition a Success!
On March 28, 2025, Johnson Park was the site of an exciting display of creativity, engineering, and teamwork as middle school students competed in the 2nd Annual Rockdale County GAWP (Georgia Association of Water Professionals) Model Water Tower Competition. This annual event challenges students to design and build functional model water towers using household materials while applying principles of engineering, physics, and water infrastructure.
This year, students from Conyers Middle, Edwards Middle, and General Ray Davis Middle Schools participated, showcasing their ingenuity and problem-solving skills. The competition was intense, but the top three teams emerged as:
- 1st Place: Team Nitrogen Monoxide – Conyers Middle
- 2nd Place: Team Shimmer and Shine – Conyers Middle
- 3rd Place: Team Mexico – Conyers Middle
In an exciting development, the top two winning teams—Nitrogen Monoxide and Shimmer and Shine—will advance to the state-level competition on April 12, 2025, in Buford, GA, where they will compete against the best young engineers from across Georgia.
This year also marked the introduction of an essay, poem, or short story competition, allowing students to express their understanding of water infrastructure in creative ways. This addition provided a new platform for students to engage with the topic beyond engineering and design.
The Rockdale County GAWP Model Water Tower Competition continues to grow, encouraging young minds to explore STEM fields while emphasizing the importance of water sustainability. Congratulations to all the participants, and best of luck to the state qualifiers!
